When one think of Contemporary Christian Music - Rap is not the first thing that would come to your mind (especially for us WASPs - White Anglo-Saxon Protestants). But back in my college days, I was introduced to a Christian songwriter, Michael Peace. In 1987, he released his album called RRRock It Right! Link
So for the many of you who considers church hymnals and/or the Gregorian Chant as contemporary Christian Music - Christian Rap music would definitely be outside your comfort level. But open your hearts to understand that praising God in all types of diverse music can and will be glorifying to Him.
Michael Peace is consider the Godfather of Holy Hip-Hop! His one song from his 1987 album had caught my attention - the song was called J-E-S-U-S! (you don't say Jesus, you spell the letters). Back in college, my Christian brothers and I all got down and jammed (as best as we could) to this song!
It was such a fun and hip song - we practiced and sang it during a Thursday evening Campus Crusade Meeting. I must say, it brought down the house! Bringing glory to God in musical rap was so unique, so uplifting, so praiseworthy!
(Unfortunately, I had a YouTube Video of the song - but it was quickly removed due to terms of use violation).
After 20+ years later - I still remember the lyrics to this song (well, bits and pieces):
I don't want to rap about just anyone,
I only want to rap about God's true son.
You see, God's the only one, who gives true love,
And the source of it, is from heaven above.
You see, I'm spreading his word throughout the nation,
And I'm spreading his Love to all creation.
I got a righteous heart and a Bible in my hand,
I'll spread the gospel all through the land.
Well, let me tell you, homeboy - your stuff don't mean a thing,
Cause you ain't rapping 'bout the one true king.
Yes, your rhymes are givin', all your ears a pain,
Cause you ain't saying that Jesus Christ reigns.
Pretty soon, you'll be saying that your rapping don't please us,
Cause born-again Christians will be rapping 'bout Jesus.
The things you rap about to, you may seem okay,
But what will be your rap on Judgement Day.
.................
Okay .... its a long rap - I tried to google for the lyrics - can't find it. Oh well!
But we all praise God in our own different way. There is no right or wrong to worship our Heavenly Father in music and song. All of us are in the same family and we will celebrate together in heaven and praising His wonderful name for all eternity.
